1. Action Comics #1 – Most Valuable Comic Book Ever Sold!
Action Comics #1 was published in June 1938 by National Press. This issue not only marked the beginning of Golden Age but also introduced the Man of Steel, Superman. Action Comics #1 became a massive hit and later expanded into a full-blown franchise making superhero genre what it is today.
This comic was written by Jerry Siegel and inked by the legendary Joe Shuster. The artwork of Action Comics #1 featured Superman showing off his brute strength by lifting a car. This cover remains legendary with only about 100 known copies left in circulation.
The most expensive Action Comic #1 to ever sell is a CGC rated VF+ 8.5 which went for a whooping Six Million Dollars back in April 2024. This historic sale marked a new benchmark for how comic books can be great investments with substantial gains. Action Comics #1 is marked as the most expensive comic book of all time across all ages.
2. Superman #1 – $5.3M
After Superman debut, Action Comics saw a surge in its sales with each issue. Superman flew out into its own standalone series. Superman #1 was published in June 1939 by D.C. Comics. Like its predecessor, this issue was written by Jerry Siegel and inked by Joe Shuster. This comic book features the origin story of the Man of Steel.
Superman #1 saw its peak price when a CGC graded VF 8.0 was sold in a private sale for $5.6 Million, back in April 2022. This comic was also the highest graded copy of this 84-year-old comic book. The $5.6 Million price tag was an increase from its $2.6 Million price for a CGC grade FN/VF 7.0 which was sold in an auction back in December 2021.
3. Captain America Comics #1 – $3.12M
Captain America Comics #1 was published by Timely Comics back in 1941. This issue featured the first appearance of Captain America. The cover artwork of Captain America Comics #1 was truly magnificent as it featured Captain America punching Nazi Hitler in the face. This issue was inked and penciled by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.
Captain America Comics #1 marked the third most expensive golden age sale when a CGC graded NM 9.4 San Francisco pedigree was sold for a record breaking $3.12 Million. This same pedigree was originally sold for $915,000 back in 2019.
4. Marvel Comics #1 – $2.42M
Marvel Comics #1 was the first ever single comic book published by Timely Comics, Timely Publications later on evolved into Marvel Entertainment. Marvel Comics #1 was published in October 1939. The cover artwork of this issue was penciled and inked by Frank R. Paul, Al Anders, and Bill Everett, featuring the first appearance of a bunch of comic characters such as Sub Mariner, Human Torch, Jungle Terror, Ka Zar, and Masked Raider. This issue is also marked as the start of the Marvel Universe.
Marvel Comics #1 became the fourth most valuable Golden Age comic book of all time when a CGC rated NM- 9.2 was sold for $2.42 Million back in March 2022. This comic is known as the “Pay Copy” because it was primarily used by the published Lloyd Jacquet to record payments to be given to the artists back in the day. These records were mentioned on the 7th Page and the cover of the issue.
Due to its significance, Marvel Comic #1 was the most expensive comic book published by Marvel Entertainments for some time. However, the title of Marvel’s most expensive comic book was later on replaced by its silver age successor.

5. Batman #1 – $2.2M
After the massive surge in sales of Detective Comics #27 featuring the first ever appearance of the Dark Knight. D.C. Comics published Batman #1 as a standalone series for Batman in April 1940. The cover artwork was created by the legendary Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson featuring the first appearance of the Clown Prince of Crime a.k.a Joker and the Cat (Cat woman).
Decades after its release, the Dark Knight is loved by many with fans willing to pay top dollar to own a piece. Being the first solo Batman comic, Batman 1 became the 5th most valuable golden age comic book when a CGC graded NM 9.4 was sold for $2.2 Million.
6. Detective Comics #27 – $2.1M
In 1939, National Press published Detective Comics #27 as an attempt to replicate the success of Action Comics’ Superman. This comic book featured the first appearance of another infamous superhero, a mere mortal known as Batman. This cover artwork was done by Bob Cane.
Batman became an overnight success. The sales of Detective Comics #27 skyrocketed, even surpassing the sales of Action Comics #1 at that time. Detective Comics saw its highest recorded sale of $2.1M when a CGC graded FN+ 6.5 appeared for sale at an auction in 2024.
7. All-Star Comics #8 – $1.62M
D.C. Comics published All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. This comic book featured the first appearance of Wonder Woman. This artwork for this issue was done by H.G Peter. Wonder Woman became wildly popular soon after its release as the character embodied wisdom, justice, and strength. This issue also featured the origin story of the Amazonian princess and her journey to the world of man.
All-Star Comics #8 not only completed the DC Trinity, but it also paved the way for female superheroes in the comic book realm. Wonder Woman was an instant hit going side by side with the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. All-Star Comics #8 saw its peak sale when a CGC graded NM 9.4 was auctioned for $1.62M in 2022.
8. Detective Comics #140 – $456K
Detective Comics #140 was published by D.C Comics in October, 1948. This issue puts the Dark Knight to test his wits by featuring the first appearance of Edward Nigma, a.k.a. The Riddler. The issue was written by Bill Finger with Win Mortimer as its cover artist. The Riddler instantly became one of the most iconic adversaries of Batman, famous for using riddles and puzzles in his crimes. The Riddler was so iconic that he became the first villain to feature on Batman’s 1966 TV series.
As time passed, The Riddler fandom grew with him appearing all over the franchise. The highest recorded grade for Detective Comics #140 is a CGC graded NM+ 9.6 from The Promise Collection. This issue fetched the peak price of $456,000 in an auction which makes it the 8th most valuable golden age comic ever sold.
9. Flash Comics #1 – $450K
D.C. Comics published Flash Comics #1 in January 1940. This issue featured the origin and first appearance of the Speedster Jay Garrick as Flash. This issue also introduced a bunch of major key characters such as Hawkman, Johnny Thunder, Whip, and Shiera Sanders.
Due to its significance, Flash Comics #1 saw its peak price when a CGC graded NM+ 9.6 pedigree from the Edgar Church (Mile High) Collection was sold for $450,000 back in 2010. This was the second most expensive comic book sale price at that time and the 9th most valuable comic book sale price currently.
10. Sensation Comics #1 – $420K
Wonder Woman makes her second appearance and her first cover appearance in Sensation Comics #1. While this issue served as the debut title for Wonder Woman, she made her first comic book appearance in All Star Comics #1.
This issue was published by D.C. Comics in January 1942 by D.C Comics. The artwork of this issue was created by H.G. Peter, while the storyline was written by William Moulton Marston. Sensation Comics #1 introduced Wonder Woman in such a way that she became a symbol of woman empowerment and a key character in D.C Comics.
